New Malware - Antivirus XP 2008 |
|
 |
|
Some e-mails are going around that require you to download and install a "Video Codec" or variations on a theme, in order to be able to view the video that is attached to the e-mail.
You then end up with a fake Virus Scanner that keeps telling you that you are infected and should pay money to remove the infection (varies from strain to strain).
Generally, your computer should be able to play any video file that is commonly sent as an attachement so if you get such an e-mail, just be careful. It may be best not to open it, no matter how tempting.
I've had a few jobs lately trying to remove this thing and it is a costly exercise!
As always, make sure your Anti Virus and Anti Malware programs are up-to-date.

Is your Wireless Home Network secure? |
|
 |
|
I accidently left my PDA on WiFi mode the other day and as I drove home from a job, my PDA kept informing me that it was able to connect to wireless networks.
I realised what was happening. As I drove past peoples houses, their wireless signal was strong enough to reach my PDA in my car as I drove past!
Roughly 50% of these networks were not secured. I was able to connect to them briefly before I drove out of range. Many of these networks were given the family name too, so I could tell who was living there. That's alot of information to be giving out!
The scary part is, these networks would have allowed me to access files and the Internet for free! No one would know.
Are people around you able to access files on your computer because your wireless Internet access isn't secure?
If you aren't sure then contact me now 9414 5565. I'll come out and have a look at your wireless network. If it isn't secure then we can secure it on the spot. Standard call out fees apply Home Support Prices

Vista or XP? |
|
 |
|
Here's a question I get asked alot. The answer isn't simple...
In my opinion and experience, XP (properly maintained and with Service Pack 3) is a very stable and secure operating system. It is familiar, does what I want it to do and if I look after it, it looks after me.
Vista is less familiar, still quite new and experiencing teething problems.
But!!!! Should we not embrace Vista as it is the future operating system? XP will eventually fall off the end of the Microsoft support line (as did 3.1, 95, 98, ME and 2000).
Yes, Microsoft have recently suggested that if consumers want it (XP) then they will continue to support it and hand out licences but not indefinitely.
Vista is slick, smooth and has some great new features. There are some great performance options and the settings are categorised well. I find the Networking options easier to work with, especially for the novice user. Once you make the "shift" in mind set, Vista is easy to use and also quite fun. From a Geek's perspective, it is an exciting new world of technology and discovery.
So, my final word on the matter. Get Vista.... but....
...be prepared to learn. Make sure you have a machine that is Vista ready, i.e. at least 2Gb RAM, at least 180Gb SATA Hard Drive and an appropriate dual core processor (minimum).
Also, you will need to make sure that your printers, scanners etc are also Vista compatible.

Do you backup? |
|
 |
|
It's sad but true, many people don't do regular backups.
The hardest thing I have to do is tell someone that their baby photos, wedding photos etc are gone forever.
Yes, we can perform a data recovery but it is by no means a way to hold onto those cherished photos. Backing up your documents and photos is as easy as 1,2,3... 4
- Insert a USB thumb drive into a spare USB slot
- Select the files you want to copy over
- Right click on the selcted files and click "Copy"
- Browse to your thumb drive, right click and "Paste"
There, that took about 2 minutes to do but now you have a simple backup of those files should anything happen to your computer!
